Time Management for Nursing Students

Return to:Becoming a Nurse

Nursing student Care plans, clinical rotations, exams, lectures and 18 thousand chapters to read by Tuesday (I may be exaggerating a bit) as well as home, family and possibly work, this is the life of a nursing student. With such demands on a nursing student you can see why proper time management is critical.

Nursing school is not like other degree programs.  The clinical component adds extra stress as well as being a major time restraint.  Nursing students without strong time management will fail or drop out. Nursing students have some of the most difficult exams and some students even try to cram for their test during their clinical training.

Nursing Shortage and Time Management

Time management issues lead many nursing students to follow different career paths. The pressure of nursing school and the lack of time for friends and family, not to mention studying, results in the low completion rate of nursing programs.

The National Student Nurses Association list a number of key attributes that a successful nursing student will demonstrate.

  • The academic ability to pass all the required subjects

  • Deep sense of responsibility to their chosen profession

  • Acceptance and caring

  • Eagerness to learn

  • Enough confidence and determination to pursue their nursing career

  • Proper time management skills

Time management skills are the key to your success as a nursing student! Many college counselors and nursing instructors offer advice on time management during orientation.

Nursing Program Time Demands

All nursing programs include a comprehensive clinical experience that demands energy and time from nursing students.  These clinicals will also include the dreaded care plan as well as research papers. With such demands on your time, it is important not to allow your work schedule to endanger the completion of your program.  It is best, even if not practical, to avoid employment while in nursing school.

Time Management Issues for Nursing Students

Staying Organized

A PDA or a day planner is essential to stay organized.  Such aids will only be a help if you use them. Be sure to block out all your commitments for school and then add in time to study.  Keeping your study time organized is also necessary in using your time efficiently.

Nursing Student Schedules

You will have little or no say over your clinical and lecture schedule in nursing school. This may be a little harsh, but college administrators do not give a rats *** about your child care issues.  Becoming a nurse will put your time management abilities to the test. Being realistic about your schedule and understanding it will end will help you to finish your nursing program.

Nursing School Burnout

You will get burned out. It is important to take scheduled breaks of at least 10 to 15 minutes while studying. It is also important to have time for yourself and your family.

Effective Study Skills for Nursing Students

If you are just spinning your wheels while studying this is the fastest way to frustration and failure.  College study skills are essential in nursing school and will help with managing your time.  Look, there is nothing worse than spending 5 hours a day studying for a test and still failing.

Nursing school s**ks, but with good time management skills you will be able to complete it!
