Tips For College General Education Classes

Return To: College Tips

Any college degree you pursue is going to require you to take general education classes. General education provides the foundation of knowledge needed to support further learning for the most part. A few general education classes are put there "to make you a more well rounded person." The first group includes: mathematics, writing, and general science. The second group, unless this is your major, include: social science, humanities and cultural awareness.

It is important to remember that the basic general education classes are required for any college degree or major that you pursue. This is why it is recommended to take these classes if you are undecided on your major. This way if you change your major these classes will not have been a waste of your time and money.

Tips for specific general education classes

Writing: Instructors in writing classes often have different agendas. While one instructor may focus on your spelling and grammar the other may be more lenient on the mechanics of writing and want to focus on developing your creative mind. Find an instructor that matches your strengths if you want an easy class or the opposite if you want a challenge. Regardless of your instructor, be sure to write your paper over time and have a second person proofread your work. Some students like writing class and others dislike it, but all college graduates have gotten through it.

Purdue: Essay Writing The essay is a commonly assigned form of writing that every student will encounter while in academia. Therefore, it is wise for the student to become capable and comfortable with this type of writing early on in her training.

Mathematics: Math is the one subject you cannot get behind in. It is very important to do your homework when it is supposed to be done, not ahead of time or late because you want to stay with the class. If you are having a problem ask for help immediately because the next concept will build on the one you don't understand.

General Sciences: The importance of these classes depend on your major. For students who are going to go on in a related field need to get ?A?s as this will be the foundation for the rest of your college career. But for the other students you just need to pass so don't kill yourself.

Social Science: Humanities and Cultural Awareness: It is important to stay on top of your readings. You need to come to class prepared and take excellent notes. Pay close attention to what the instructor emphasizes because that is what he or she will test on. Be sure to avoid the trap of inserting your own opinions into your answers and try to mimic the opinions of your instructors.
